A New Polyurethane-based LRTM Process
Materials science company Dow Chemical and global manufacturer of fluid delivery and production solutions for industrial applications Magnum Venus Products (MVP, Knoxville, Tenn., U.S.) have introduced a new polyurethane-based Fast Flow LRTM process (Lightweight Resin Transfer Molding), where material is delivered by a three-component injection system.
This Closed Molding Process
increases production by reducing injection time. The new technology combines MVP’s Flex Molding Process and LRTM processes and uses collapsible resin channels to speed resin flow.

“As a leader in closed molding, we have developed the Fast Flow LRTM process with our years of experience, which combines multiple technologies to produce parts faster and more efficiently. This process was developed to meet the market demand for shorter curing times when using high-viscosity resins (such as flame retardants) to produce large parts,” emphasized MVP’s International Sales Director.
The new generation LRTM process is the result of a collaboration between Dow Chemical and MVP, applying new polyurethane-based solutions to advanced manufacturing. It is reportedly more efficient and cost-effective than traditional RTM and molding processes. This is because the process only requires the simplest mold structure and the material usage is very efficient.
In fact, the polyurethane system contains 20-25% bio-based materials (according to DIN EN 16785-1). MVP said that due to the high toughness of polyurethane, the process requires less material to achieve the same mechanical properties as traditional processes, thus creating more durable, longer-lasting and lighter vehicle parts.
Dow Polyurethanes European Commercial Director Industrial Markets added: “Our new polyurethane system solutions provide superior aesthetic performance and improved industrial hygiene characteristics compared to existing resins. Our new LRTM applications are compatible with MVP‘s Fast Flow LRTM, which uses a new three-component system for metering/mixing and dispensing resins from low to high dosages.”
MVP‘s Fast Flow Injection System is designed for large molds and reduces curing time while maintaining high material reactivity, thereby shortening production cycles.
