The Difference between Fiberglass Chopped Strand Mat and Continuous Filament Mat

 

The mechanical action between the raw fibers is bonded with a small amount of adhesive, referred to as Continuous Filament Mat. It is a national high-tech product and a national new product.

 

Fiberglass Chopped Strand Mat is a reinforcing material made by cutting glass fiber raw fibers into short fibers of a certain length and bonding them with a powder adhesive or an emulsion adhesive.

 

From the above basic definition, we can see the obvious difference between the two felts. Although both are made of raw fibers, one has been chopped and the other has not been chopped.

 

Let us now introduce the two felts in terms of performance!

 

Continuous Filament Mat Properties

(1) The product is tear-resistant. Since the continuous felt raw fibers are continuously looped, isotropic and has high strength (the strength is about 1-1.5 times that of Fiberglass Chopped Strand Mat), it is tear-resistant.

 

(2) The surface finish of the product is high and can be used for decorative surfaces.

 

(3) The designability of the product. Through the changes in the felt layer and the tightness and the different adhesives, it can be used for different product requirements and molding processes, such as pultrusion, RTM, vacuum casting, and molding.

 

(4) Easy to cut, good softness and laminating properties, easy to shape, and can adapt to more complex molds.

 

Performance of Fiberglass Chopped Strand Mat

 

(1) Chopped Strand Mat does not have the same tight interlacing points as fabric, and is easy to absorb resin. The resin content of the product is high (50-75%), so the product has good sealing and no leakage, which improves the water resistance and corrosion resistance of the product, and also improves the appearance quality.

 

(2) Chopped Strand Mat is not as dense as fabric, so it is easy to thicken when used to make reinforced products. In addition, the production process of chopped strand mat is less than that of fabric, and the cost is also lower. The use of Chopped Strand Mat can reduce the cost of products.

 

(3) The fibers in Chopped Strand Mat are non-directional and the surface is rougher than that of fabric, so the interlayer adhesion is good, making the product not easy to delaminate, and the strength of the product is isotropic.

 

(4) The fibers in Chopped Strand Mat are discontinuous, so after the product is damaged, the damage area is small and the strength reduction is also small.

 

(5) Resin Permeability: good resin permeability, fast permeation speed, accelerated curing speed, improved production efficiency, generally the resin permeation rate is less than or equal to 60 seconds.

 

(6) Coating Performance: good peritoneal performance, easy to cut, convenient construction, suitable for making products with more complex shapes

 

The two types of felt have different performances and are obviously different in use. Glass Fiber Continuous Filament Mat is mainly used in pultrusion profiles, RTM process, and dry-type transformers, while glass fiber chopped strands are more used in hand lay-up, molding, machine-made panels and other places.
