Do You Know the Nine Key Properties of Pultruded Composites and What are Their Application Prospects?

Pultruded Composites are High-Performance Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites manufactured using a continuous process called pultrusion.

Here, continuous fibers (such as glass or carbon) are pulled through a thermosetting resin bath (such as epoxy, polyester or vinyl ester) and then formed into the desired shape using a mold. The resin is then cured to form a strong, lightweight and durable composite product.

  1. Classification of Pultruded Composites

Pultruded Resins

The matrix resin is an important component of pultruded composites. Common pultrusion resins include epoxy, polyurethane, phenolic, vinyl, and recently, thermoplastic resin systems that have received widespread attention. Due to the characteristics of pultruded composites, the matrix resin needs to have low mixed viscosity and fast reaction speed under high temperature conditions. When selecting the matrix resin, not only the pultrusion reaction rate should be considered, but also the viscosity of the pultrusion resin. If the viscosity is relatively high, this will affect the lubrication effect during product production.

Epoxy Resins

Pultruded composites prepared with epoxy pultrusion resins have relatively high strength during application, can be used under high temperature conditions, and cure relatively quickly. In addition, epoxy resin-based fiber-reinforced composite materials are the main materials for wind turbine blades and blade roots, but there are problems such as high material brittleness, short application period, poor permeability and high curing temperature, which increase the difficulty of the molding process, cause resource waste and increase manufacturing costs, and seriously restrict the development of my country’s wind power industry.

Polyurethane

The viscosity of polyurethane resin is low, allowing a higher amount of glass fiber than polyester or vinyl ester resin, which makes the bending elastic modulus of pultruded polyurethane composite materials close to the properties of aluminum. Compared with other resins, it has excellent processing properties.

Phenolic Resin

Due to the outstanding advantages of phenolic resin such as low toxicity release, low smoke rate and flame retardancy, its application in pultruded composite materials in rail transportation, offshore oil drilling platforms, chemical anti-corrosion workshops and pipelines has gradually become a hot spot in recent years. However, the traditional phenolic resin has a slow curing reaction speed and a long molding cycle. In particular, a large amount of condensation water and low molecular volatiles will be generated during curing. Bubbles are easily formed in the pultruded products produced in rapid and continuous production, leaving pores, which seriously affect the performance of the products. Acid catalysis systems are usually used.

Thermoplastic Resin

Thermoplastic composites avoid the inherent environmental friendliness, long processing cycle, and difficulty in recycling of thermosetting composites, and have strong flexibility and impact resistance, good anti-destruction ability and damping performance. Thermoplastic composites have strong resistance to chemical and environmental corrosion, no chemical reaction occurs during the curing process, and can be processed quickly. Thermoplastic composites can be reused without performance degradation. Common thermoplastic resins include polypropylene, nylon, polyphenylene sulfide, polyetheretherketone, polyethylene, polyamide, etc.

Compared with traditional materials such as metals, ceramics and non-reinforced plastics, FRP pultrusion has many advantages. They have unique custom design capabilities to meet specific product needs.

  1. FRP (glass reinforced plastic) pultruded profiles have broad application prospects and the industry development trend is positive

FRP is glass reinforced plastic, scientifically known as fiber reinforced composite material, which refers to reinforced plastics prepared by physical and chemical processes with synthetic resin as the matrix and glass fiber as the reinforcing material. It is widely used in the fields of petroleum, electricity, construction, chemical industry, etc. At present, there are five main types of glass fiber forming processes, namely hand lay-up forming, fiber winding forming, extrusion forming, molding forming, and injection molding. Among them, the glass fiber profile produced by pultrusion forming is called FRP pultruded profile or fiber reinforced composite pultruded profile.

Compared with other molding methods, FRP pultrusion molding has the advantages of higher energy efficiency, cost-effectiveness, environmental friendliness and less by-product generation, and is currently one of the mainstream methods for industrial preparation of FRP. At the same time, FRP pultruded profiles prepared by pultrusion process have the advantages of light weight, high strength-to-weight ratio, good durability, strong corrosion resistance, and low maintenance cost. They have broad application prospects in new energy, rail transit, environmental protection, petrochemical, electricity, construction, papermaking, steel and other fields.

Specifically, electricity is the earliest application field for the development of FRP pultruded profiles. In this field, FRP pultruded profiles are mainly used in the manufacturing of cable trays, insulating ladders, motor slot wedges, transformer isolation rods and other product manufacturing scenarios; chemical industry is one of its important application fields, and FRP pultruded profiles are mainly used in the manufacturing of walking grids, structural brackets, FRP pumping rods, cooling tower brackets and other product manufacturing scenarios; construction is its main application field, and FRP pultruded profiles are mainly used in the preparation of bay windows, FRP composite partitions, FRP assembled eaves and other product preparation scenarios.

  1. Nine Key Properties of Pultruded Fiber Profiles

High Strength

Pultruded FRP has an excellent strength-to-weight ratio. It is very strong, yet lighter than traditional materials such as steel or aluminum. Continuous fiber reinforcements have high tensile and flexural strengths, making FRP an ideal structural material for numerous applications.

LightWeight

The lightweight nature of FRP is a significant advantage in many industries. It helps reduce the overall weight of a structure, vehicle, or component, resulting in improved fuel efficiency, increased payload capacity, and easier handling during installation or transportation.

Corrosion Resistance

One of the main advantages of FRP is its inherent corrosion resistance. Unlike metals, which corrode when exposed to moisture, chemicals, or harsh environments, FRP does not rust and can withstand extensive chemical exposure without sacrificing performance. The corrosion resistance of FRP makes it suitable for marine environments, chemical plants, or structures exposed to a variety of corrosive elements.

Fatigue Resistance

FRP has excellent fatigue resistance, which means it can withstand repeated cyclic loads without significant degradation in performance. This property is crucial for applications subject to dynamic or cyclic loads, such as bridges, wind turbine blades or aerospace components.

Design Flexibility

FRP offers design flexibility due to its excellent ability to be formed and shaped during the manufacturing process. The fibers can be oriented in different directions to tailor the mechanical properties of the material to specific requirements. This versatility enables the production of complex shapes and highly customizable components.

Electrical Insulation

FRP has extremely low electrical conductivity, making it ideal for applications requiring electrical insulation. FRP is often used in electrical enclosures, circuit board assemblies, or as structural members in environments where electrical conductivity may pose a risk.

Thermal Insulation

FRP has low thermal conductivity, making it suitable for applications requiring thermal insulation. Reducing heat transfer and increasing energy efficiency is a major advantage in various industries such as construction, transportation and aerospace, and pultruded FRP structural components are significantly better than traditional methods in minimizing heat transfer.

Non-Magnetic

Unlike metals, FRP is non-magnetic, which is very beneficial in applications where magnetic interference must be minimized, such as medical devices or electronics.

Weathering Resistance

FRP has excellent resistance to environmental factors such as UV radiation, moisture and temperature changes. If manufactured correctly for the environment, FRP will not easily degrade when exposed to sunlight, humidity or extreme temperatures, making it a durable and long-lasting choice.
